Biography

Voluntary Insanity is the brain child of Andrew McKenzie and is based out of Windsor, Virginia. Andrew started playing music at the age of 12 when his mother gave him his first instrument, her old Stella Harmony acoustic guitar. Andrew knew there was something about music early on; it wasn't until he attended an AC/DC concert where Angus Young inspired Andrew to take playing seriously. He didn't start writing music right away but with an ambitious move to the bass guitar, Andrew began performing in Sacramento, Ca with bands such as Drone, Plex, Damaged Things, and Odessah. Andrew took a break from playing music to serve in the United States Army when some unfortunate events had inspired Andrew to write Landmine, a tribute to his friends and fallen members of his platoon. This unfortunate moment in time did however spark Andrew's 'insanity' which led him back to his passion for music returning to the guitar as well as a few other instruments such as mandolin, piano and bass. Andrew put out the first Voluntary Insanity album, Shake Sphere, in 2011 after getting out of the Army, followed up by The Red Chair in 2013 and Critical Mass in 2016. Andrew draws from his influences from artists such as Peter Gabriel, Metallica, and Shotgun Messiah in an eclectic blend of Dance Music and Heavy Metal. The latest album Inferno and subsequent follow up Insanity Spectrum are sure to be pleasing to the ear.
